While ripping to lossless is desirable, ripping to high-quality VBR mp3 might provide a long term solution also since mp3 is a de-facto standard as much as MPEG2 is for DVD's. ITunes' HE-AAC encoding might also if it's part of the MPEG-4 standard and if that standard gets wide adoption.

Ripping to lossless is useful in order to convert to a new format, if MP3 is good enough you might not need to transcode as portable players won't be as restricted in memory size as they are in 2004.

Is there a ripper that saves lyrics and album art in a useful form? e.g. ID3V2 tags can contain lyrics and album art.
