DTS-HD Master Audio is selected only as an optional lossless surround sound format for Blu-ray and HD-DVD. It is a competing standard next to Dolby TrueHD.

It is a hybrid lossless/lossy codec with a DTS "core" and a correction stream. This makes for compatibility with devices that only support DTS, which will then only get the core stream.

Open source decoders are available through FFmpeg and libdca (used by VideoLAN/VLC). The Matroska container format supports DTS-HD.
