Mono - short for Monaural - refers to audio streams with only one channel. It was the most popular audio setup from the early recordings to the middle of the 20th century, when binaural and stereo started taking its place.

These days, it's still heavily used in telephony, including VoIP. It's also used in radio and TV broadcasting.
